Certificate Enrollment Fee: $500
This certificate provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge for teaching English to non-native speakers of English. Successful completion of the certificate in conjunction with a baccalaureate degree will give students the tools they need to teach English while serving on a foreign mission field. Potential service to the church may also include outreach to immigrants, teaching English as an evangelistic tool, or teaching in a language school.
Because foreign countries require TESOL instructors to have a college degree, the TESOL certificate can only be received when students complete a bachelor’s degree from Central or if they have already earned a bachelor’s degree.
TESOL Certificate Goals
In addition to the goals of the Certificate of Biblical Knowledge, the student completing a TESOL certificate will be able to:
- Prepare and teach lessons using materials appropriate for a variety of age groups.
- Understand the structural elements of the English language with an emphasis on how to assist others in second language acquisition.
- Discover resources and strategies for systematically presenting English instruction to non-native speakers.
- Experience instruction with non-native speakers to learn about the unique challenges these opportunities bring.
- Experience foreign language study to gain appreciation for the task of language instruction and learning.
- Practice communicating Biblical truths in cross-cultural contexts using sound principles and multiple methods.
