Central's basketball teams were in Joplin, Missouri this past week to attend the ACCA National Tournament. The men were ranked 9th and finished in 8th place in the tournament. They beat Arlington Baptist College of Texas on Wednesday (86-67), then were beat in three straight games - Hillsdale on Thursday (91-83), Champion Baptist on Friday (76-67) and then Ozark Christian College on Saturday morning (92-71). This put the Saints in 8th place, in the field of 13 teams. Despite the hard losses, the Saints brought home several awards which were presented at their annual sports banquet. Israel Ramsey received the Academic All-American award. Hayden Hagerman earned All-American Honorable Mention and Kris Holford received first-team All-American.
The women were seeded 3rd in the tournament and that is where they finished. After beating Calvary on Thursday (69-58), the ladies were stunned by Rhema Bible College on Friday, losing 50-44; then on Saturday, Central prevailed over Grace Bible of Michigan in a down-to-the-wire contest (57-56). Several women brought home honors from the tournament. The Academic All-American Award is given to student-athletes who are juniors or seniors with a cumulative GPA of more than 3.4. This honor was given to Mazie Dowdy, Melanie Eidson and Caley Palmer. Raven Woods received All-American Honorable Mention. Second-team All-American was awarded to Taylor Terry. First-Team All-American was awarded to Mazie Dowdy and Kelsi Mueller.
This will be the second time for the men's team to participate in the tournment. They finished 6th in 2008 and earned 2nd place in 2009 (the 2009 team included: Caleb Lewis, Bryce Ramay, Reggie Evans, Daniel Goehringer, Vince Mejia, DeRonte Polite, Kris Holford, and Israel Ramsey).
The Lady Saints attended the tournament in 2010 and finished in 9th (the team included: Mazie Dowdy, Erica Norris, Loree Vickio, Emilee Southam Burian, Marissa Hunter, Leez Howard, Caley Palmer and Melanie Eidson).
